Совокупная длительность процессов создания и использования продукта определенного вида от исследования возможности его производства до прекращения использования. По отношению к уже производимому товару используется термин Жизненный цикл товара - период времени, в течение которого товар обладает жизнеспособностью на рынке. Выделяют пять этапов жизненного цикла товара: продвижение товара на рынок - появление товара на рынке и его пробные продажи; рост объема продаж - признание товара покупателями и быстрое увеличение объема продаж; стадия зрелости - замедление увеличения объема продаж, максимальная прибыльность; насыщение рынка товаром - стабилизация продаж на максимальном уровне; спад объема продаж и прибыли - устойчивое сокращение реализации товара и снятие его с производства.
